Las Vegas casinos taken by MIT card counting geeks in Movie “21.” The movie opens this Friday. What an interesting turn of events, Sin City casinos with theaters, will gladly play the “21” movie.

Nevada casinos were outsmarted and taken for a several million dollar ride by six MIT students with super high IQs, including Jeff MA, disguises and fake IDs. This all took place around 1995.

During a read of Wired Magazine’s article in 2002 about card counting exploits, Kevin Spacey was inspired to produce a movie by the card counting geeks.

The movie “21,” opens March 28 in theaters, and was filmed mostly at Planet Hollywood Las Vegas Resort on the Strip. Hollywood stars in the movie include Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworh and Lawrence Fishburne, Aaron Yoo, Jim Sturgess and Liza Lapira. A book was produced under the title of “Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who Took Vegas for Millions.”

The total amount of filming in Las Vegas, Nevada real estate consisted of five weeks for the cast and crew of “21”, three weeks of pre production at Planet Hollywood. There is an onsite scene of Fishburne chasing the cheaters through the casino and slot machines that was filmed there.

Another popular casino in Las Vegas, NV is Red Rock Resort. Here they filmed the scene with Kate Bosworth and Ben Campbell in Cherry Nightclub and then offsite at the Hard Rock Las Vegas hotel.

High roller suites in Las Vegas are reserved for big money players or “whales.” The many weeks in Las Vegas would have cost the movie company a lot of cash. The Producer Dana Brunetti built sets to resemble the Strip hotel suites and only filmed in Boston.
