Mark “The Hammer” Coleman works out at Caesars Palace Las Vegas real estate in preparation for “The Real Deal” on Saturday, October 21, fight against PRIDE Fighting Championship heavyweight champ Fedor Emelianenko.
Pride Fighting Championships Fedor Emelianenko heavyweight champion is regarded by experts as one of the finest mma mixed martial arts fighter in the world.
“Crushing power, killer-type stuff,” said Frank Trigg, a one-time challenger for the UFC Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight title and the color analyst on Pride’s pay-per-view.
Emelianenko is athletic, with the agility of a defensive back and the size of a linebacker. He’s technically sound in every area a fighter needs.
Mark Coleman who will challenge Emelianenko today in Pride Fighting Championship at the Thomas & Mack Center Las Vegas in the main event of the first North American card, said forget everything you think you know about the 30-year-old Russian.
Coleman who was a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic wrestling team, will turn 42 on Dec. 20.
Coleman in 1997 submitted Dan Severn to become the first UFC Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight champion. “I was doing pretty well against him the first time, but the pace was pretty fast.
“I decided to take a break and I learned a lesson. You take a break and you’ll wind up submitting fairly quickly.”
How does anyone beat Emelianenko if he’s that good much less someone soon to be 42 years old?
Emelianenko forced Coleman to submit to an arm bar at 2:11 of the first round of a Japan fight in April 2004.
Emelianenko’s ability has evolved since 2004 and Coleman will have to be better if he wants to win.
Emelianenko has only one pro loss, as he was cut by an inadvertent elbow, so Coleman’s showing against him was one of his toughest challenges.
Coleman won’t have the advantage of using the cage since Pride Fighting bouts are contested in a ring instead of in a cage like they are in the UFC.
Coleman will need to take Emelianenko to the mat so he can ground and pound. If he takes him to the ground, Emelianenko’s strength is taken away.
Coleman wants to win an exciting fight. He would rather lose an exciting fight than a boring one. PRIDE is interested in inviting fighters back who give the fans what they’re looking for.
