Las Vegas Marathon Includes $50,000 Bonus & Sports Book Betting Odds
Las Vegas Marathon brings with it all the aspects one might expect, dozens of runners dressed as Elvis, a run-through Las Vegas wedding chapel, and a 6 a.m. race start that puts it under the pre-dawn lights of the Strip real estate.
For Sunday’s Las Vegas real estate race, the elite women’s field will start 17 minutes, 52 seconds ahead of the elite men and an expected 16,000 other runners, 8,000 for the marathon and 8,000 for the half-marathon. The first runner across the finish line at Mandalay Bay Las Vegas gets a $50,000 bonus, on top of $15,000 for being the overall men’s or women’s winner in the Las Vegas Marathon.
The Las Vegas Marathon also offers “The Challenge,” which adds one more renowned Vegas aspect to the race: Betting.
Despite the large time difference to be made up, last year’s difference was 14:40, the men are a minus-180 favorite at the Mandalay Bay sports book, and the women are plus-150.
Kenyan Noah Talam, whose personal best is 2:17:14, doesn’t expect it to be as easy as last year, when the top men passed the women’s lead pack at the 18-mile mark.
Race president Bill Burke instituted the male-female challenge last year, when the revamped marathon in Las Vegas real estate debuted on the Strip. The challenge had proven popular at the Los Angeles Marathon, which Burke also oversees, and this year in L.A., the top female held off the top male by eight seconds.
To that end, Burke said he expects to succeed, notably because of the host city.
The event also includes a half-marathon this year, and both races start and finish at Mandalay Bay Las Vegas. The marathon goes up Las Vegas Boulevard, through the Fremont Street Experience, then north and west before a long stretch south on Torrey Pines Drive. Runners then head east back to Mandalay Bay.
The half-marathon follows the same route to the downtown Las Vegas Fremont Street Experience, then heads south along Industrial Road and Frank Sinatra Drive to the finish line. Source: LV Review Journal
