Las Vegas Population Spikes 2nd Highest In Country
Census Bureau latest statistics show Las Vegas is one of the fastest-growing big cities in the country. Of cities with a population of 250,000 or greater, Las Vegas had the second-highest percentage of population increase from 2000 through 2005. Its 14 percent jump was behind only Fort Worth’s 16.6 percent boost among major cities. During the five-year period, the Southern Nevada municipality grew from 478,000 to 545,147.
Suburban growth within the city limits has contributed greatly to Las Vegas’ population expansion, according to Margo Wheeler, the director of Las Vegas planning and development department. “The northwest is our fastest-growing area,” she said, “and the area north of Cheyenne (avenue) in the western part of the valley.”
City officials are looking at ways to keep up with all the population growth. “As ever, it is to keep up with the infrastructure,” Wheeler said. “Generally, in the northwest, it is handled by the Las Vegas real estate developers themselves. The presence of power is crucial to the development of the northwest. We are in talks with Nevada Power and a private consultant about the ability to supply power to all those units coming online downtown.”Â
While outlying parts of Las Vegas played a key role in the most recent Census figures, Wheeler expects downtown Las Vegas resurgence and high-rise condo boom to fuel a similar population-percentage increase in the latter part of the decade. “We anticipate we’ll be in the top 25 cities (in size) in a year or two.”
Las Vegas is the 29th largest-ranked city by the Census Bureau. New York City remains by far the largest city in country with 8.1 million people.
