MGM Grand Macau Opens $1.25 Billion Resort With Michelle Yeoh Actress
MGM Grand Macau opens $1.25 billion resort with Malaysian Michelle Yeoh actress, business tycoons and celebrities this Tuesday. This casino is a joint venture between MGM Mirage Las Vegas and Pansy Ho, daughter of Stanley Ho, Macau’s former casino kingpin. The partnership is looking for another location on the Cotai Strip for an additional mega resort similar to the Venetian.
The night was a sight to behold. Beautifully dressed waitresses in black suits poured champagne glasses full with Veuve Cliquot to socialites in furs and formal sequin dresses.
The European style plaza was stuffed with large groups of excited gamblers waiting for the grand opening.
Last year Macau grossed more gambling revenue than the Las Vegas, Nevada Strip. It is the only place in China where legalized gambling is permitted.
Stanley Ho is no stranger to the gaming business. In Macau, until 2001, he ran a casino business for 40 years. Then the government gave foreign companies gaming licenses to enter the once monopoly.
The Sands Macau opened in 2004 by American Sheldon Adelson of the Venetian Las Vegas, NV. Just four months ago he opened up the Venetian Macau valued at $2.4 billion mega resort casino mirroring the look of the Las Vegas NV hotel.
It is expected the luxury resort of the MGM Grand will cater to the “whales†or VIP customers with gambling, entertainment and high end shopping.
The architectural design is a mix of art deco, Chinese minimalism and European architecture. The MGM Grand casino in Macau has a 20 feet high glass ceiling in the 35 story building similar to the Lisbon central train station. On the lawn outside a life sized Salvador Dalà statue of a girl skipping rope. Hand-blown glass sculptures by artist Dale Chihuly are in the opulent marble lobby. The same glass artist displaying his artwork in the Bellagio Las Vegas.
Future phase of construction will add a shopping center and luxury condos, circus, theater and a convention center. Source: AP
