Wildlife Springs Preserve Las Vegas Celebrates A One Year Anniversary
Wildlife Springs Preserve Las Vegas celebrates a one year anniversary today. The Springs Preserve is a $235 million attraction modeled after Central Park in New York, NY.
Expectations for the attraction, including 180 acres of galleries, museums and desert plans, have been strong but Las Vegas visitors haven’t made it a place to visit over the Strip.
Out of town visitors totaled to the Springs Preserve 6,200 people out of the total of 200,000 in attendance.
That’s one third of the total projected attendance expected for the first year of operation.
The Las Vegas Valley Water District is the operator of the Springs Preserve. The expenses over revenues were $10.2 million and the water district will have to cover the deficit.
Not expecting to be a profitable venture in the first couple of years the preserve’s five year plan is to subsidize $3 million a year. That’s about a half a million more than they spent per year on the Desert Demonstration Gardens.
Total design and construction costs for the Springs Preserve was $121 million. Due to rising construction costs another $39 million was spent.
The preserve’s land has been owned by the water district for the past 54 years. The freshwater springs and desert oasis was the first place settlers made home and became the birthplace of Las Vegas, Nevada.
