Las Vegas Celebrated Earth Hour 2009 As 1 Of 10 Flagship World Cities
Las Vegas Strip celebrated Earth Hour 2009 with lights out from the Las Vegas welcome sign to downtown Las Vegas at Fremont Street Experience. More than 2,400 cities in 82 countries participated in Earth Hour 2009.
Las Vegas was chosen as one of 10 flagship cities. This was Las Vegas first time participation in the environmental support to raise awareness about climate change organized by the World Wildlife Foundation.
 
Earth Hour started on Saturday night, March 28th from 8:30 to 9:30 pm. Visitors and locals who weren’t aware of the impending “lights out†quickly were shocked and in amazement when they saw iconic Vegas landmarks turn off.
One of the first marquees to go out was located at Bills Gamblin’ Hall and Saloon across from Caesars Palace. The Flamingo’s neon disappeared, Bally’s TV screen, Las Vegas welcome sign and iconic Luxors hotel beam went dark, too.
Downtown Las Vegas at Fremont Street Experience joined in right before 8:30 p.m. with a short video on the huge Via Vision screen, “World’s Biggest Big Screen†before it went off for one hour.
Thousands of visitors downtown were given glow necklaces to add some glow to the darkened signs.
Millions of tourists a year come to Las Vegas for the neon. This year Las Vegas helped a cause to raise awareness of energy usage.
