UFC Ultimate Fighting Championship’s turnaround from a $40 million failure into a pop cultural icon began with Spike TV reality show, “The Ultimate Fighter,” with success in 2005.
The Ultimate Fighter by UFC consists of eight fighters in two weight divisions living and training in the same Las Vegas house in Las Vegas real estate, with the winner in each class earning a guaranteed Ultimate Fighting Championship contract.
The UFC hired two of its big-name UFC fighters to coach the fighter reality series contestants, and at the end of each season the coaches fought on pay per view.
UFC president Dana White named Jens Pulver and B.J. Penn as the coaches for Ultimate Championship Fighter Season 5, but said he would have the lightweight contenders fight live on Spike TV in the series conclusion.
Pulver and Penn met for Pulver’s lightweight belt Jan. 11, 2002, in one of the most anticipated and bouts in UFC history. Pulver won a majority decision to retain the crown, but a rematch never occurred because Pulver got into a contract dispute with the UFC shortly after the fight and left the company.B.J. Penn moved up in weight and later won the Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight title.
He was stopped by Matt Hughes in a UFC welterweight title fight Sept. 23 in Anaheim, Calif., and hasn’t fought since. Pulver was knocked out in 48 seconds on that undercard by Joe Lauzon.
This is a fight that either on can win. This isn’t one of those where you know one guy is going to win. It’s one that can go either way.
