UFC 80 RAPID FIRE BJ Penn is winner over Joe Stevenson by submission choke. Ultimate Fighting Championship 80 pay per view event also had Fabricio Werdum winner over Gabriel Gonzaga by TKO in the second round.
The mixed martial arts fun and excitement in the Octagon took place January 19, 2008, at the Metro Radio Arena in England.
It was a packed house and broke previous house record held by Luciano Pavarotti. In attendance were 8,412 fight fans with a box office earnings record of $1.25 million.
BJ Penn vs. Joe Stevenson
Penn landed a heavy shot early in round one to take Stevenson down. It didn’t look good for Stevenson as Penn went in for the ground and pound. Stevenson rolled and stopped Penn from getting on his back. As Stevenson was getting back on his feet, Penn hit hi with a hard punch, landing him back to the mat. For a small amount of time Penn had side control. Now Stevenson is bleeding from an elbow blow. It was a bloody mma fight. Stevenson kept the pace with all the heat he was receiving from his fierce competitor.
Looking on shaky ground, Stevenson started the round with blood rolling down the center of his face. It didn’t look good so the ringside doctor had to take a look. After they connected after the break, Penn rocked Stevenson with a combo and brought him to the mat. As Penn mounted, Penn rolled a 180 ending up on his back. Penn trapped Stevenson’s arm with his leg and used a choke. The final move was a choke. Penn became the UFC Lightweight Champion in the second round.
Other than Randy Couture, BJ Penn, is the second man in UFC history to win two weight classes with two titles.
With the win, Penn advances to 13-4-1. Stevenson declines to 33-8.
